It forces the coffee grounds down and out of the way after brewing so you don't drink them.

If it's the same as a french press you put the coffee and hot water in the glass vessel and loosely place the plunger on top to keep it hot. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and press the plunger down to the bottom. Viola! Really good strong coffee!
